I look down at Molly’s reply, as I see the spire of Church Street coming into view. Three weeks ago, I wouldn’t ‘know how it is’ at all. But now, between the coffee shop and the choir and planning a gig of my own, I’m beginning to.

@mmmmathers But I’m at another event around there that night. Never heard of the band but I’ll try and make an appearance. One photo, free of charge. Good for the brand. And it’s Christmas after all x

I reread the message, looking from my photo to the noticeboard and back again. Molly hasn’t exactly confirmed that she’ll be here, but then, people like that need to pull out all the time. It’s not like George will ever need to know the truth. Not about that. …You Already Belong Here. I smile at the sign, at how perfectly it captures the heart of this place. And I belong with George, I remind myself, savouring the last sip of the coffee he bought for me.

‘You’re obsessed with that noticeboard.’

I swing around to see Theo standing there, in a denim shirt I’ve never seen him wear before, rolled up at the sleeves so that I can see the strong veins on his forearms. The fact he’s not wearing a coat in this cold weather tells me he’s probably been setting out coffee tables or doing some other sort of heavy lifting for the community centre inside. He’s holding some kind of paper in his hands, but I’m distracted by his hair: has he had it cut? My eyes search his face, weathered but somehow warmer now that I’ve learnt more about him from Avery.

‘No, I’m not…’ I say, throwing my spare hand up in the air in objection, still clutching my gift from George in my other. ‘I’m just trying to find a space for something.’

‘Is that right?’ Theo takes a step towards me. I can’t believe we met in this precise space only two and a half weeks ago. It feels like I’ve known him forever and yet haven’t got to know enough about him at all. There’s so much I want to know. ‘Oh, wait… The gig?’

‘The band is secured and some good advertising too,’ I say, proudly. ‘I told you I’d be able to pull it off.’

For you, Poppy. Anything. I savour George’s words with my final sip of his coffee. But then, he did take a bit of convincing and it was the message from Molly that seemed to sway it. I push the thought away, because it really doesn’t matter what convinced him, it’s just brilliant that he is on board, that he’s finally starting to be convinced by me, too.

Theo brushes past me, moving over to my once-nemesis of a noticeboard, pressing the paper in his hands up to it and pinning it into the cork. He takes a step back to look at it. The Gig That Keeps on Giving. Join us for fun and fundraising this Friday. Details to come. But how did he even know it would be happening? I’ve only just told him about it.
